Before You Book Your Next Trip: 5 Simple Ways to Save Hundreds

A Little Planning Can Make a Big Difference

One thing we’ve learned from our travels is that saving money doesn’t always require finding an incredible deal or accumulating thousands of points. Sometimes, it’s simply about knowing what to check before making a reservation. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, a family vacation, or a trip overseas, these five strategies can help you avoid spending more than necessary.

1. Compare Cash Prices With Points Before Booking

If you’ve accumulated airline miles, hotel points, or flexible credit card rewards, don’t automatically assume using them is your best option. Compare the cash price against the number of points required, including any taxes and fees. For example, if a hotel costs $150 per night but requires 30,000 points, you might be better off paying cash and saving those points for a more expensive stay. On the other hand, those same points could potentially cover a room that would otherwise cost $400 or more. The key is understanding that points have value—and using them where they stretch your travel budget the furthest.

2. Be Flexible With Dates, Airports, and Destinations

A little flexibility can make an enormous difference in travel costs. Flying on a Tuesday instead of a Friday, shifting your vacation by a week, or checking an alternative airport could save hundreds of dollars. The same applies to hotels, where rates can vary dramatically depending on local events, weekends, and seasonal demand. If your schedule allows, compare several date combinations before committing. Sometimes the cheapest vacation isn’t about changing where you want to go…it’s simply about changing when you go.  Some airlines and hotels offer a pricing calendar where you can look at the pricing for rates over a full month, allowing you the chance to jump on the lower rates if they fit your schedule.

3. Join Hotel Loyalty Programs Before Your Next Stay

Most major hotel loyalty programs are free to join, and you don’t need to be a frequent traveler to benefit. Programs such as Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, and World of Hyatt allow members to earn points toward future stays, and some offer special member rates or additional perks. Even if you only stay in hotels a few times a year, those points can accumulate over time. Before booking, compare the hotel’s direct member rate with other available rates, and check whether any promotions could earn you additional points. Some offers or promotions require registering before booking, so make sure you’ve opted in to the promotion or offer.  Remember that reservations made through third-party booking sites often don’t qualify for hotel loyalty points or elite benefits.

4. Book Flexible Rates and Keep Checking Prices

Here’s a strategy that many travelers overlook: booking a hotel or rental car doesn’t necessarily mean you’re stuck with that price. When possible, choose reservations that allow free cancellation, then check rates periodically before your trip. If the price drops, you may be able to cancel and rebook at the lower rate. We’ve used this approach to save money on travel without changing our plans. Just be sure to understand the cancellation deadline and any restrictions before making changes. For airfare, policies vary, but some airlines allow eligible tickets to be changed without a change fee, although fare differences may apply.

5. Take Advantage of Benefits You’re Already Paying For

Before purchasing travel insurance, paying for checked bags, or adding rental car coverage, check the benefits included with your existing credit cards. Some cards offer trip delay protection, baggage coverage, rental car collision damage coverage, or airline-specific benefits. You may also have travel perks through memberships you already hold. These benefits can save money, but it’s important to understand the eligibility requirements, exclusions, and whether you need to pay for the trip with a particular card. Don’t pay extra for something you may already have.

The Bottom Line

The best travel savings often come from combining several small strategies rather than relying on one big trick. Comparing prices, using points wisely, joining free loyalty programs, monitoring reservations, and understanding your existing benefits can make a meaningful difference. Before booking your next trip, take a few extra minutes to explore your options. You might be surprised how much you can save!
